50TH NATIONAL CONVENTIONSaturday, May 29, 2004Atlantic City, New Jersey The 50th National Convention of the Chios Societies of the Americas and Canada, Inc. came to order at the Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Center on Saturday, May 29th, 2004 at 10:30 AM. The Supreme President, John M. Kontolios and Supreme Secretary, Dimitrios B. Kontolios officially recorded the attendance of 45 members. The Supreme President called for Mr. George Malafis to lead the delegates in an opening prayer. He then introduced the Chairman of the Convention, Mr. Jim G. Mihalios, President of the Association of Kambiousion Chios of America. Mr. Mihalios welcomed the delegates and called for all Chians to come together to strengthen their Societies and to support fundraising for Hellenic schools and education. Mr. Kontolios then introduced the President of the Chian Federation of NY, Mr. Alex Doulis. Mr. Doulis welcomed the delegates to the convention and called on them to pass some lasting resolutions that will have impact for many years to come. Mr. Kontolios, in his opening remarks, lamented that only two scholarship applications were received, and that more responsibility has be taken among all the Societies so that more opportunities are offered to our youth. The Supreme Treasurer, Mr. Stefanos Bouboulis, reports the paid delegates as follows: Chian Federation of NY: (23) Panchiaki Korais Society: (2) Koraes Society, Chapter 16, of Philadelphia: (3) Chios Society Chapter 4, Baltimore: (2) Homer Chios Association of Boston: (2) Chios Society Chapter 7, Cleveland: (2) United Chios Society Homer, Steubenville-Weirton: (1) Agia Markella, Warren: (1) Agia Markella, New Orleans: (1) Mr. Bouboulis reminds the delegation that the extra $2.00 from the raising of the dues from $5.00 to $7.00, goes to help fund the expenses for the office for expatriated Chians. Mr. Kostas Sevastos nominates Mr. John Frangos for Convention Meeting Chairman. Mr. Nick Papagiannakis seconds the motion, which was passed unanimously. Mr. Frangos appoints Mr. Jim G. The Standing Committees were appointed as follows: Constitutional: Alex Doulis, Chairman Financial: Nick Papagiannakis, Stefanos Bouboulis, Co-Chairmen Complaints: George Parikakis, Chairman Scholarship: Stella Parikakis, Chairperson, Angela Vitellas, Kostas Sevastos, Co-Chairs Public Relations: Stavros Haviaras, Chairman The Supreme Secretary, Mr. Dimitrios B. Kontolios read the minutes of the Quarterly Meeting, which took place at the Chiotiko Spiti, Astoria, NY on March 27, 2004. Mr. Michael Theologos moved to accept; Mr. Stavros Haviaras seconded, with the correction that the 50,000 Eurodollars, for the Cardiology Fundraising, should read as US$50,000.
The Supreme President, Mr. John Kontolios in his final report, thanked the Supreme Lodge, Governors, and the Board of Directors for all their support during his two terms. Mr. Kontolios reports events during his last term; the Florida Convention was not well attended, but the resolution of continued Skylitsion Hospital Fundraising was passed. In 2003, the CSA&C lost two members, the late Steve Mekedis, and the late Stanley Kamarados. During the Baltimore, New York, and Philadelphia quarterly meetings, the foundation and planning for the Convention in Chios, sponsored by the Chian Federation, was established. Chians from Africa, Australia, Athens, and North America attended the Convention. The main resolutions passed were to raise US$50,000 for the Cardiac Care Unit of the Skylitsion Hospital, and to increase the membership dues from $5.00 to $7.00 to help fund the expenses for the office for expatriated Chians. Katerina Savakis, of Warren, OH, was awarded the Scholarship Award. Mr. Christoforos Stratakis was awarded the Educational Award, and Mr. Yiannis Karadis was awarded the Cultural Award. During the New Orleans quarterly meeting, Supreme Governor of Louisiana, Mr. Markos Kountouroudas, President Michael Christakis, Capt. Michael Psarelis, along with all the hosts of the Chios Society of New Orleans, Agia Markella, pledged $5000 for the Cardiac Care Unit of the Skylitsion Hospital. After the meeting, the members of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church hosted a Christmas party to honor past and present athletes of the Greek Olympic Team. During the previous quarterly meeting in New York, before the Atlantic City Convention, the Panchiaki Korais Society was welcomed back to the CSA&C; the Chian Federation opened a special account for the Skylitsion Hospital Cardiac Care Fundraising, for which the Association of Kambiousion Chios pledged their net profits from the Atlantic City Convention; and all Chians marched together in the Greek Independence Day Parade the following day. The Supreme Treasurer, Mr. Stefanos Bouboulis, reports the balances of $31134.81 in the Money Market account and $12558.70 in the Checking account. Mr. Kostas Sevastos moved to accept, and Mr. George Parikakis seconds the motion, that was passed unanimously. Before the acceptance of the treasurer’s report, Mr. Bouboulis praised the generosity of the Supreme President, Mr. John Kontolios, for absorbing the expenses of the Florida Convention, and the Supreme Secretary, Mr. Dimitrios B. Kontolios, for donating all his postage and stationery expenses. Mr. Kostas Sevastos, reports that the Cardiac Care Fundraising for the Skylitsion Hospital in Chios has received $1000 each from Stefanos Bouboulis and George Malafis, $1500 from the Chios Society in Cleveland, and donations pledged from New Orleans ($5000) and Kalymasia($500) societies. The Chios Cardiology Unit Fund’s account (06097197) has been opened at Atlantic Bank. Mr. Stavros Haviaras and Mr. George Arnitsis have joined the committee. The Administrator of the Skylitsion Hospital in Chios, Mr. Nick Christou will receive the funds from representatives of the CSA&C. Ms. Angela Vitellas reports that she has received statistics, from Mr. Christou, of 80,000 reported examinations, from 1993, using all the donated eye, catscan, mammography, surgical, and dialysis equipment acquired from previous fundraising. Mr. Christou has pledged to acknowledge the CSA&C with a plaque on the equipment that will be purchased from the current Cardiac Care Fundraising. Mr. Angelo Mallas gives a testimonial describing how well his son was treated when he was admitted to the hospital. The Catscan performed at the hospital saved them from having to go to Athens for treatment. Chian Federation President, Mr. Alex Doulis, motions for the creation of a Semi-Annual Report to be presented at future meetings and conventions. Mr. John Kontolios seconds the motion that was passed, unanimously. Supreme Treasurer, Mr. Stefanos Bouboulis reports that the 51th National Chian Convention may be held in Boston with the pending approval of the Homer Chios Society. Supreme President, Mr. John Kontolios reports that the Chios Society of New Orleans, Agia Markella, has expressed an interest in sponsoring the 52nd National Convention. Each society will be responsible for organizing the itinerary for their conventions. The upcoming Supreme Lodge will be responsible to follow up on each request and notify all members, accordingly.
Mr. Nick Papagiannakis motioned to pass the following resolution: The delegates to the Chios Societies of America and Canada, 50th Convention at Atlantic City, New Jersey, on Saturday May 29, 2004, unanimously decide to support the work of the Prefecture of Chios and the standing demand of the Chian people, for the extension of the Chios Airport. The extension is needed to make the Airport safe based on all international specifications. Mr. Stefanos Bouboulis seconded the motion, which was passed, unanimously. The resolution will be finalized later and sent to the Prefecture of Chios, the press, and all other responsible parties. Page 3 |

The Constitutional Committee Chairman, Mr. Alex Doulis, recommended the following: that the criteria for direct membership to the CSA&C be more clarified; that the Supreme Vice-President’s primary function should be to lead an outreach program to encourage the recruitment of new societies and individual members to the CSA&C; that a full time Constitutional Committee be appointed to review and amend the Constitution as a whole. The report was passed, unanimously, from a motion from Mr. Peter Sgourros that was seconded by Mr. John Kontolios. The Financial Committee Co-Chairmen, Mr. Nick Papagiannakis and Mr. Stefanos Bouboulis report that the financial documentation and account status of the CSA&C books are satisfactory. The report was passed, unanimously, from a motion from Mr. Nick Manolakis that was seconded by Mr. Steve Siderias. The Complaints Committee Chairman, Mr. George Parikakis recommended that the minutes of the quarterly meetings and the conventions be distributed to more people to increase awareness of the CSA&C’s activities. Mr. Dimitrios B. Kontolios responds that www.chiossocieties.org has been activated and an archive of minutes will now be available to anyone visiting the website. The Public Relations Committee Chairman, Mr. Stavros Haviaras recommended that the Supreme Lodge establish a dialogue among its member societies to better inform them of when meetings and events are held. The Scholarship Committee Chairperson, Mrs. Stella Parikakis reported that two applicants, Mr. John Flamenio, of Warren, OH, and Miss Georgia Pagonis, of Parma, OH were both worthy of scholarships. Mr. Stefanos Bouboulis motioned to award $750 to both applicants and Mr. Dimitrios B. Kontolios seconded the motion, which was passed unanimously.

Youth Advisor: Mr. Dimitrios B. Kontolios nominated Miss Mary-Kay Kallergis. Miss Kallergis was elected by acclamation. The Supreme President may appoint additional regional Youth Advisors. His Grace, Metropolitan Maximos of Pittsburgh, remains as Spiritual Advisor. Mr. Dimitrios B. Kontolios addressed the delegates after the election
and dedicated the tasks of the new Supreme Lodge to resolve unanswered issues
mentioned during the meeting, and to increase participation in the CSA&C
from younger Chian-Americans.
Mr. Kostas Sevastos moved to adjourn the Convention Meeting, and Mr.
Michael Theologos seconded the motion, which was carried at 2:15 PM.
